Simple Questions Simple Answers: Patch 9.22

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 05:57 AM PST

    Hello summoners!

In order to create better discussion in the subreddit, we will be redirecting all simple questions to this thread.

What is a simple question? Typically, we define a simple question as something that can be answered fully within a single, or maybe two at most, comments. In this thread, you can ask any question you need answered about League of Legends, even if it isn't necessarily about learning the game itself. Keep in mind we will still continue to remove golden rule violations, rants, memes, topics against Riot's ToS, and paid services - but the other rules are generally more lax here.

What you can do to help!

For now, this is a patch-based thread, meaning it will be posted once every two weeks. Checking back on this thread later in the patch and answering any questions that have been posted would be a huge help!

If you're trying to ask a question, the more specific you are, the better it is for all of us! We can't give you any help if we don't get much to work with in the first place.

    Resources

Which do you use? Deviations in stats are typically minor, so whichever one you prefer.

If you have any suggestions for this thread, please let us know through modmail how we could improve!

Hey all, it's that time of year again - we're looking for some more volunteers to help make sure the sub can keep running smoothly. We're doing it a bit differently this time with a Google form as opposed to posting apps on the thread; you're free to leave questions below though, if you have any.

These will be open until Nov 6th, 11:59PM EST. Good luck, hope to see you all there 🤠

Only 20% win rate after 20+ games with Diana, despite having positive KDA, winning lane and outfarming opponent. I'm still a beginner and I wanted to swap to mid lane starting with Diana. Now I have encountered these really bad stats, even though I play "okay". Is there any problem with Diana atm?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 04:18 AM PST

I started maining Diana 2-3 weeks ago and I feel really comfy playing her. But as mentioned my WR after 22 games is only 20%, which is devastating. I have the feeling, I win midgame, but fall off late game with Diana very hard.
Is Diana a viable pick atm? Are there any problems with her looking at team comps.? Do you have any tips? Like late game builds, counter picks to avoid etc...

On win streaks, loss streaks, and feeling like you're better than other people at your rank.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 09:36 AM PST

    The Problem

There seems to be a set of phenomena in the League ranked experience: (1) win streaks and loss streaks are quite common, and (2) everyone thinks they are much better than their teammates, despite being ranked the same as them.

    Why is this the case?

I believe that these occur because:

    • League of Legends is an incredibly-complicated game that places enormous demands on your brain, and that is quite hard to sustain throughout the day.
    • The way the chemical hormones work in your brain encourage feedback loops, which manifest as "streaky" outcomes.
    • MMR increases logarithmically with each subsequent win, and the system places you into games in which you're much more likely to lose to keep you at 50%.
    • The personality type that is attracted to this type of game is prone to experiencing higher-than-normal negative emotion, greatly magnified in situations where they don't have direct control over the outcome (inters, griefers, etc.). This just makes the streaks more common.
    • Some other biases that I'll briefly touch on here.

    Let me explain...

    First off, are we just...delusional?

I've seen the winstreak/loss streak phenomenon everywhere, and experienced it myself. Many people might say:

"It's just a 50/50 coinflip, and since you're not that much better than your opponents, variance is quite low and streaks occur often."

I've also heard that we tend to use a selection bias when comparing outselves to others. For example: if your vision score is usually quite high, that will be the metric you'll use to compare yourself to others.

"Man, that Yi didn't buy a single control ward all game...how did I lose to him?"

Let's keep it real: these effects almost certainly play a role here, the point of this post is simply that the picture is more complicated than it seems.

Contrary to popular opinion, I think there are quite a lot of players out there that may be stuck in Gold/Platinum that could easily hit high Diamond/Masters if they just played more consistently every game.

    Here's why...

League is a very complicated game

It took a supercomputer to "solve" chess: a very structured game with a grid-like gamespace and very restrictive move sequence possibilities. League is nothing of the sort.

The gamespace in which League is played is effectively infinite. Every time you click your mouse, you're creating a new gamestate, and that's happening hundreds of times each minute, for ten players across the map.

There are no two identical games, and each game is extraordinarily complex. Playing reactively, and responding to changes in the game state is a very mentally taxing task.

This means that unless you have habits tuned into the ideal challenger-level decision-making for the current game meta (AKA "Challenger Autopilot"), you have to engage your brain actively if you want to win games. This also means that for most players actively trying to climb, you cannot play more than a handful of optimal games each day.

Your brain fatigues, and needs to recharge before you'll be able to perform at your peak again (not to mention how a tired brain inhibits your ability to combat negative emotion, which also encourages loss streaks).

Sure, your brain gets tired after ~5-6 games while you're really focused, but that's not all that seems to influence game outcomes.

In my experience as a human, I've noticed that feedback loops tend to really affect me (and I'm suspicious that this may be more common). For instance, if I stumble over my words in a conversation, it makes it more likely that I'll do the same again a few moments later. However, if I'm on the ball and cracking jokes...conversation flows very naturally.

It happened when I was shooting free-throws playing basketball as a kid as well, and now when I rock climb. Naturally, when I play league, it rears it's head again.

I'd like to explain my point here with a story to help contextualize what I'm trying to say...

"Elo Hell?", or "A Typical Day Playing League"

Your first game of the day goes pretty well...all your ganks convert, you're tracking the enemy jungler with ease, you snowball your lead into taking every objective, and close out the game with a spectacular gold advantage.

The next game, you're much more confident that your ganks will convert so you go out of your way to take more risky opportunities that catch the enemy off guard and they convert as well. Rinse repeat. You're on a 6-game hot streak and you feel unstoppable (partly because you are).

However, eventually you have to stop for the night, but it's 12:30am and you have to be up at 6:00am for work.

The next day, you sit down to play again, embolded from your recent performance, yet exhausted from the lack of sleep. You get a bit cocky and think:

"heh, I'm much better than these noobs, I don't have to try that hard".

Aaaaand OOF, you throw a few easy kills their way, they take dragon while you were powerfarming topside, you get a small lead, but then throw it right back to them with that juicy 700G shutdown, and eventually you lose the game.

"Ahh that was just a fluke, I'll get back in there and redeem that loss".

So you do...but you're much more conservative now because you know you're already -1 for the day. You don't want to take big risky plays because they might not work, and when you do go for a play, you hesitate because you're unsure if it will pan out. You opt for the low-variance option: power-farming your jungle.

The enemy jungler ganks like mad, taking objectives left and right and before you know it they're pounding on your nexus again.

"How is this happening? These players are clearly much worse than me"

you think, and based on your performance the day before, you'd be right. Especially since it's not like there's much difference in player caliber between Gold II 55LP and Gold II 64LP.

How can you go from 6 games with a perfect KDA, 80%+ kill participation, taking every objective right as it spawns to losing to effectively the same players?

...it's because you're tilted now, and tired from the night before.

All the negative emotion is strangling your ability to think critically and evaluate risks. When your laners die 1v1 you feel a sense of hopelessness...

"Maybe if I just farm a bit more, I can carry".

Then the ugly side of League rears its head: the dreaded question mark ping. Why Riot decided to give a historically-toxic player-base the ability to spam a question mark is beyond me, but it feeds into your negative, tired & vulnerable state of mind nonetheless.

You end the night on a 5-game loss streak, baffled and confused. You thought you had it figured out -- you thought you understood the game.

"Ahh I know, I'll hit up YouTube and watch some more educational content!"

    ...and the cycle continues.

    What I'm trying to say...

Despite the story being a bit of a cathartic release, what's the point here?

What I'm saying is that the reason that many players feel like they're not placed where they deserve is because they're using their peak performance as an anchor, which is very different from their typical performance.

I bet many of you hardstuck in Gold can play at a Diamond+ level for one or two games, before you get derailed by all the other parts of climbing that really matter: consistency, proper decision-making and risk analysis, maintaining a positive mental state, etc.

You don't need more game knowledge, or another coaching session, you just need consistency.

In the end, it's our human nature that causes both (1) streaky performance and the (2) feeling that you're in the wrong bracket.

To reiterate, it seems like the following are what cause these phenomena:

Here's what I think can be done about the ones that you can control:

    Problem Solution
League places huge demands on your brain. (1) Only play a maximum of 5 "tryhard" ranked games a day, and (2) get enough sleep, and eat well while you're playing. Eventually you'll build "challenger autopilot" and this won't be much of a problem for you.
Feedback loops influence outcomes. Stop playing ranked for the day after 2 consecutive losses.
MMR increases logarithmically / forced losses. Can't control this. Lose with grace and understand it happens to everyone.
Your personal psychology might be getting in the way. (1) Turn off all and allied chat in your game settings immediately, and (2) be aware of this and try to implement systems that help you mitigate the impact. Be kind to yourself.

It's really hard, but I try to remember that climbing the ranked ladder is a marathon. One game doesn't really matter that much.

A 51% win-rate will take you to challenger if you're consistent and disciplined enough to play well each and every game, and focus on learning with each game.

Hope that helps. Thanks for reading, and good luck out there on the rift!

    Some jungle questions

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:28 PM PST

    1) I find I'm often 1-2 levels behind the enemy jungler, is that due to farm or ganking too much/too little? Typically it's around level 8-9 I notice they're already 10, with similar KDA.

    2) I love Maokai jungle and know he's not meta atm, what would be a meta champ like him? Maybe Amumu?

    3) I have no idea what to look at in a replay to see what to improve. This is gold/plat level btw

13% win rate with akali, but I never feel like I’m hard feeding. Am I unlucky or am I doing something wrong?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 10:28 AM PST

    Here's my op.gg: https://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=redeclaw

I feel like I'm winning lane in most of my games, but then when mid to late game comes I start to feel more useless. I've heard of the 40/40/20 rule, where 40% of my games are free wins, 40% are guaranteed losses, and the other 20% you actually have control over. I think I'm putting myself in a position where I can get carried by good teammates, but it feels like they've been generally kind of bad, though. I rely a lot on my teammates to take down the frontline or keep them busy so I can kill the back line without getting ccd, but i can't find a window to get in in most teamfights.

    I struggle with the macro

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:19 AM PST

I manage "well" in the laning phase, but after that point, I don't have a clear idea of what to do. When I try to push a sidelane, the enemy team force a teamfight and my team dies, when I'm with my team I don't feel that we are doing something.

What I'm doing wrong? How can I see when is correct to push or to stay with my team?

Lately I've been using Diana, Akali and Sylas mostly

Tips for beating a hard bully bot lane (Such as Caitlyn Zyra)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 08:47 AM PST

I always seem to get against a Zyra & Caitlyn bot lane or a Lulu & Ashe and I always get smacked. I play mainly MF, Tristana, and Ezreal. I can keep up in farm, but I always lose lane pressure and consequently dragon for my jungler. I can never seem to win games like this. Any tips on trading against comps like this or what adc's / supports to play to counter this would be greatly appreciated.

Moving straight vs. Moving from side to side

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:18 PM PST

This title may have caught you off guard for how little context I put into it.

Let's say you were low HP and currently being chased by someone who isn't in basic attack range. He just his their cool downs and isn't susceptible to finishing you off using abilities. You know that you can outrun him simply because you have greater move speed; although, you anticipate that his spells will come up sooner or later. If you have decent game sense, you should realize that jerking your character from left to right means that the person chasing you will eventually catch up because you decreased the gap between you and him.

Now, if you are playing a champion with an instant dash, but is shortly coming off cool down, which would be the best option to conserve time? Walking in a straight line or attempting to dodge the chaser's abilities?

How many hours of coaching should I hire per week?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 04:24 PM PST

I'm currently hiring a coach who will charge 10€/hour. But I don't know how many hours should I hire him for.

Any of you out there who hired coaching sessions in the past have any tips on this??

I'm currently a mid main gold 4 player. I'm not even hardstuck, I just don't play rankeds. It barely took round 20/25 wins to go from silver 2 to there.

The thing is, my next objetive is super ambitious, I want to peek on Diamond 4 in SoloQ. No duo abusing and that shit, I want to do it by myself, by playing good and knowing what I'm doing right or wrong.

How to actually climb the ranked ladder?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 04:59 AM PST

Hello i am fondra, A hardstuck negative wr jungle main. I have over 1000 games already in ranked games. I thought about this after i got demoted from masters. That is climbing and improving the same? I think that climbing is king of rolling a dice, what i mean is better luck wins. That you continue to play if you win and stop if you lose 2-3 games. Since i got demoted from masters, before i got promoted my promos was pretty much luck. I got lucky getting enemies who are autofilled basicallt i stomped my promos pretty easily. Now my question is do i improve if i just play-play-play, not caring of having a bad teammates over and over again. Because i feel like i still should learn from these. Should i change my ranked strategy for the next season?

Is that Yi and Jax seems to be the favourite picks of new players?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 04:13 PM PST

I know people that play Jax like 100th game and still don't know how their stacks works, that they may cast W+Q, or how the hell enemy Jax do so much damage, that they can use Gunblade active, use ward to escape... lot of things in such simple AA-based melee champion

Similar principles for Yi but Yi is even worse since people play him like an all-in coin flip and due to Yi nature they think that scoring triple kill is like "wow I was born to play this champion" bs. They don't know what is happening on their screen but hey "something is happening".

They also tends to be more griefy and going into flame on chat.

I do not see any champions that works in such a way, I literally checked any other champion and only these two are the one that does triple+ kills while the gamer may not know what the hell is happening on his screen.

    Damage testing question

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:50 PM PST

I was doing some damage testing on the PBE with my main champions but I'm still not sure how to get an accurate number on how much damage I do. The main thing that's confusing me are items and levels. It's easy to calculate a champions damage potential at levels 1- 5 mainly because there aren't a ton of variables to factor in. However, this starts to change around level 6 due to the fact most champions will probably have more than one item by this point, which makes things a bit hard to calculate. Should I just calculate the damage using lolwiki numbers? Let use Qiyana as an example since she was the one I was testing. According to the wiki, Qiyana does around 290 damage at level 3 if she hits everything and this isn't even taking into account armor. However, on the PBE the number I got was 268 and this is with armor (Around 40 base armor on the target dummy, so it takes about 29% less damage). Am I doing something wrong?

    Azir assistance.... (Any rank)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 11:31 AM PST

I have been playing the game for quite some time. I began in the jungle learning Pantheon, then Amumi, then Shaco, etc. I knew from a stand point if I wanted to rank I needed to understand a lane (Being that if I got auto filled else where I was f**ked). So, I chose mid lane. Now of course years later I realize I could have went Panth top and that answered that but I was hot and new. I wanted a champ that struck out to me. I never picked someone because of win rate or op-ness on a tier list. I picked from heart. My friends gave me sht for trying jungle as my first role and were impressed. It was no surprise to them I unlocked and tried azir mid as soon as I told them I wanted to play mid. Turns out. I sucked. I mean 0% WR Azir gameplay. I fed, and fed and fed. So I turned away for about 2 years from him. I'm ready to try again with knowledge under my belt and a basic understanding of his kit. Can someone for the love of god please explain to me his combos and builds so I don't stay a 0% WR Azir? I have very good knowledge of the game and understand pressure, cs, drag, trades, etc. I not a low tier player, but am always accepting anyone's help on tips and tricks. A bronze teaching me an animation cancel and a plat throwing me a build I am more then thankful for both's information. So don't be scared to speak up no matter the rank. (Some places are biased on rank and it'a a dislike of mine to discourage help from anyone.)

What do i do if i can't teamfight as Aatrox?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:49 AM PST

Played a game where i was against a darius. I went 0/4 in lane because i miss played an early fight and he got a lead. My jungler ganked me once but he took the kill.

The enemy team had a vayne and a pretty fed rengar on top of the darius i lost to. My team was not that far behind though it was mostly just me. I couldn't really teamfight because i got deleted before i even got to pop my ult so i tried staying back and pushing lanes but i didn't really do anything and the enemy team ended up rolling us.

My question is, in these kinds of situations where i can't really fight and i couldn't split either because of the rengar jumping on me and killing me in 1 combo what can i really do?

Trying to relate LoL to my Smite experience

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

    Hi All!

Recently I've been interested in trying to get into league. It seems like a lot of fun, and I love MOBAs, but I want to try to make sure I know what I'm doing.

I feel like the easiest way for me to do this would be to draw from what I know about Smite, as I have played over 1,000 hours of it. So, if there is anyone who also has a lot of Smite experience and can help me understand LoL concepts as a result, I would really appreciate it!

My biggest concern is understanding the flow of the game. For example, in Smite you often clear wave and then go to jungle for more farm, regardless of the role you're playing. Is that the case in LoL? I think I want to start by playing Mid, as that seems like the position I would be most comfortable with. When I'm farming lane, do I go farm anything in the jungle between waves?

When it comes to going for the bigger objectives, how does that usually work/when does that usually occur? In smite, some Gods can solo the Fury (which I think is similar to the Drake?) objective, while usually the whole team will group up to do Fire Giant (which I think is similar to Baron?).

As far as CSing to make sure I get the gold from waves, should I hold my ability to optimize the amount of CS I get? I know I'll get better at last hitting in time, but I've struggled initially. Is there advice anyone could give me regarding this?

Sorry for all the questions and the long post. When I play a game I really try to invest myself in it so I get good at it, so I am trying to be as detailed as possible.

I have read the beginner's guide and have watched several YouTube videos, but I would appreciate any and all information anyone could share with me!

Edit: also, is there a reliable website for builds? I know there are websites for builds, but if they're anything like what I've experienced with Smite, many are inaccurate. lol

i tend to losing CS when the game in mid game phase. tips?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 12:58 AM PST

i like to play veigar when i'm at early my CS usually fine losing 5-10 CS is still ok.

Black jungle map on YouTube lol videos

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:55 AM PST

    Hi

I usually watch lol videos through YouTube. However, I realised that for some streamers, they hide the jungle mini map. Sometimes I want to see the mini map to learn the map situation more as it affects their laning decision.

I am wondering why they are doing this?

    Wave Control in League

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 10:26 AM PST

Hi, kinda a newbie to LoL (currently Silver 1). I have played OG Dota and Dota 2, and I have trouble controlling the wave in League. In Dota one could deny creeps and pull waves into the jungle to ensure a good position for the wave to crash (near tower for safety for example). League doesn't really have the same wave manipulation mechanics, and I would love it if someone can explain wave management more in depth.

    1. Freezing and slow push, how to set one up?
    2. How to "pull" the wave closer to you. Especially when the opponent is freezing
    3. How to freeze with Tiamat
    4. How to manage wave as a support
    5. How to "deny" cs from opponent

    Thanks in advance!

When is the right time to buy mobi boots as a jungler?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:02 AM PST

Hi I'm a low dia jungle main vietnam server (english is not my first language sorry for bad english if there are any) and I want to know when is the perfect time to buy mobi boots vs any other boots. I usually just get boots via mastery or i buy tier 1 boots around my second back and complete my jungle item then I buy the upgraded boots after. Believe it or not I never buy mobi boots because I find it very useless compared to merc or tabis. But I sometimes see streamers or pro players buy it and I don't understand when to buy it. Can anyone please give insights about this? Thank you.
