How To Use Team Compositions To Win Clash Tournaments

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:17 PM PST

Hello guys. You may remember me as the guy from r/summonerschool who correctly predicted 69% of professional games in 2019 utilizing only champion picks and team compositions to determine the victor. With Clash being released next weekend I figure that now would be a good time to share what I've learned about team compositions so you can get all that sweet, sweet Clash loot.

This is the method I used to win the Hextech cup multiple times during the Clash global beta:

    1. All players on the team rate all champions
    2. Determine which champions can be flex picks
    3. Create champion pools for each team composition type
    4. Pick two compositions that are not adjacent to each other
    5. Find picks that can fit into either comp that you also feel comfortable blind picking
    6. In general, delay your support pick as late as possible
    7. When possible, draft at least two winning matchups

I go over all of these steps in a ton more detail in my "Clash Guide" video but here's the cliff notes for each step.

    Rate all champions:

    • Recommend ratings 1 to 10
    • Be honest
    • Don't put all champions 10
    • Don't put all champions 1
    • Limit champions at each rating to 15-20
    • Champions you would be willing to blind pick should be highly rated
    • See my "Champions Rating Template" tool for a example template you can use

Determine what champions can be flex picks:

    • Find champions that two or more players rate highly
    • Determine if that champion can be flexed in those two roles
    • Don't be turned off by off meta picks
    • Flexing a champion to an off meta role can completely surprise enemy teams
    • If you can play that champion effectively in an off meta role it makes that champion very threatening to enemy teams
    • Flex picks can be picked early in draft and allow you to get more counter matchups and force bad picks from your opponents

Create champion pools for each team composition type:

    • Be very broad in what champions you include in each champion pool
    • Prioritize flex picks
    • Prioritize champions you feel comfortable with more than the "perfect" champion for that comp
    • Discuss each composition with your team
    • Rate how strong your team is with each team composition
    • If possible, play a few games with each composition to determine how natural they feel
    • You will often be limited by the player with the smallest champion pool
    • Team compositions are defined in my "Team Compositions Guide" video

Pick two compositions that are not adjacent to each other:

    • Results in your team:
    • Being strong against four compositions
    • Being even against one composition
    • If you pick two compositions that are adjacent it results in your team:
    • Being strong against three compositions
    • Being even against one composition
    • Being weak against one composition
    • If you only pick one composition it results in your team:
    • Being strong against two compositions
    • Being even against one composition
    • Being weak against two compositions
    • All team composition matchups are discussed in my "Team Composition Matchups" video

Find picks that can fit into either comp that you also feel comfortable blind picking:

    • Jungle and bot are usually good roles to blind pick
    • Proper jungle pathing, warding and lane priority can negate bad jungle matchups
    • The support pick can negate bad bot lane matchups
    • Flex picks are very powerful for this
    • If you intend to use a flex pick, don't pick the other role the champion can be flexed to
    • More information on which champions are good in which team comps can be found in my "Champion Classes, Videos & Team Comps" tool

In general, delay your support pick as late as possible:

    • Support can wildly swing a composition one way or another
    • Support position has the most versatility
    • Leona as opposed to Janna
    • Taric as opposed to Vel'Koz
    • Plenty of off meta picks that can be played support in coordinated play
    • Zac, Swain, Shaco, Ashe, Miss Fortune, Teemo, etc.
    • If your support has a very limited champion pool the strength of delaying the support pick diminishes

When possible, draft at least two winning matchups:

    • Matchups meaning top, jungle, mid and bot (support included with bot)
    • Team compositions don't matter in the early game
    • Easiest way to lose when you have a team composition advantage is to get destroyed in laning phase
    • You need to have winning, or at least even, matchups to ensure you can enter the mid game even or with a minimal deficit
    • If you have one or no winning matchups play extremely passive and avoid fighting early at all costs
    • If you don't have a team composition advantage you should draft strongly for early game, fight as often as possible and focus on snowballing a lead

Here's all the videos and tools I've released to help people identify what champions they want to play and learn how to build team compositions.

Have you think about how league is full of weird laws?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 01:15 PM PST

    • You do not do full damage to turrets unless minions are around
    • Turrets have fortification that vanishes away at 5 mins, but botlane turret doesn't
    • Until recently you cannot push minions away when they are spawning until they get to outer turret range (Thanks Adrian)
    • Turrets gain 40% damage each time they strike a champion, up to 120% bonus damage. And it doesn't reset when switching targets
    • Turret attacks cannot be dodged, except by spells where a champion becomes untargetable, but when Yuumi is with Fizz the untargetable cat starts getting turret agro if he E's inside turret
    • I don't even know what's the current state of funneling
    • Soraka must not be a toplaner, but remember what they told us in the Taric rework? That he still could go toplane, nice joke
    • You cannot proc spellthief if a teammate isn't around

    And the consistency of spells

    • Brand can proc anything with his over time passive but any other champ doesn't get the privilege
    • Zyra plants attack speed gets affected by frozen heart but heimer turrets don't (haha organic things)
    • Malzahar voidlings still scale with AD just for you to remember that build
    • Teemo can proc 2 times Aery with 1 auto but 0 times comet and 0 times Rylai's

Like boy there are a lot of things to remember while playing this game, just because someone tried some cheezy stuff and it got hardcoded to not get tried again into the game

Reason I left dota for league

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 02:38 PM PST

I have found myself playing league whenever I play individually. I have over 5K hours in dota and used to play at a very high level however I am crap at league , my fundamentals are great but my understanding of each champion was Poot and therefore left me to die a lot. I am a silver scrub but the reason I have been playing so much despite my skill difference is it feels like there is no auto lose games.

What I mean by this is not that some hero ( often Yasuo or zed) just stomps and runs over the team. I mean ( for those you of you who know dota) that the enemy team just picks a hero and auto wins a game. In dota there are many heroes like broodmother and huskar or meepo that if a person is skilled enough and manages to last pick , without a counter on your team , you just lose. Almost every game I have played of league and lost and check back through a hero and I realise there was something fundamental about that hero that I misunderstood and therefore next time I play against it I can make adjustments which often win me the game.

As well despite what recent league pros have been saying about if you make super strong new heroes no one will be playing the original heroes they have not experienced how frustrating the blanket patches that have been occurring in dota are. Massively changing champions and making them insanely broken , taking 2 months sometimes to change heroes which have to be permantely banned or you lose. ( I know heroes like aphelios or senna could have arguments for that) but the difference is that in the pub scene (at least as much as I have seen , maxing out low gold ) many of these heroes can still be beaten in most games.

I'm not saying I will never return to dota but I wanted to let league players know that despite all the issues you think you have with your game , your main competitor has managed to repel a lifelong fan with the changes . As well as it is a refreshing enjoyment.

Don't harsh on league it is a quality game with a lot of fun interactions . A game I hope to love and become more skilled at , see you in challenger next year :D

Why Aphelios can solo a Inhib Tower at 2/3 health without wave while not even fed?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:43 PM PST

This scene ( at 33:45 ) from yesterday's G2 game made me really confused. The casters didn't explain it either.

Is that intended design? How does that even work? Is that normal for adcs and I just didn't realize it's possible yet? I somehow feel like towers are a bit too squishy atm.

Edit: As people rightfully have pointed out it's more half health then 2/3 ( I falsely assumed he started autoattacking the tower before the camera fully followed the TP since the translation is a bit sloppy ). That doesn't change much of the issue though.

I made a prototype to show the CDs of champs in a game to help you out. What do you think?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2020 12:04 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/2Zz9qH7

This is a prototype and nothing in there is set on stone. This is a static page of an example. I still didn't work on the logic, and depending on the reception of the idea, I will either realize the idea or not. If you have any ideas that you want to share, I would love to hear them. The slider is for CDr from 0-40 or 5-45 that is supposed to do the math after you adjust it and give the new CDs. I have already talked to the rioters who are responsible for the API that I will be consuming to generate this, and they said that as long as I don't track the CDs and the user is required to check for those cooldowns, it should be fine.

    The idea behind it:

A quality that a good player has is how much information they are extracting and make use of. A good example would be Faker's famous F-keys spamming to understand the position of his teammates and act accordingly. Another one is Doinb's Flash timer spamming in chat to let his team know of a potential play. They are making judgments according to these bits of information.

How many times did you play vs a Nocturne and was afraid of being targeted by his Ultimate when he's not shown in your mini-map? You would play defensively until he gets spotted. He used his Ultimate and you started to play aggressively because you know it's on CD, after a couple of waves, you chipped the enemy laner and want to do a dive and you are thinking of calling the jungler for a dive, but you got scared that nuctorn's R is off CD and he can counter the dive. You make your own judgments depending on hard estimates and thus deviates you further from making a sound judgment that you can take.

Asking for someone to memorize of CDs and do the math with CDr would sound ridiculous, but that's not necessary needed to up your game. Let's take examples:

Abilities CD difference: Blitzcrank vs Morgana The annoying part in this matchup as a Blitz player is Morgana's E (Shield) which denies his Q which makes blitz look for roaming mid or playing passive. If you take a closer look at the CDs of these 2 abilities you will see that Blitz Q is 20/19/18/17/16 where Morgana's E is 26/24/22/20/18. There're 6 seconds difference between both abilities. That's not much of a difference, but now you know that if morgana used her E to negate your Q, you have 6 seconds window after your Q is off CD. If you want to take it even further, you can try to bait his Q(binding) before your Q goes off CD by few seconds to make your engage easier. You can also take advantage of player's hard estimate and bluff about your Q being off CD and try to engage to bait his Q(binding) when he is in state of panic.

A more general example would be ultimates like Liss vs Fizz where Liss R 120/100/80 & Fizz's 100/85/70 where if you were a Fizz player and Liss counters your R by her's, you will know that you got 20 second window until her's is up. On the other hand, if you were Liss, you will know that you will have to play defensively when your R is 20 on CD.

Global ultimates CD is a crucial information that would influence your play style also, so knowing that Nuct R is 1:30 minutes at first rank and that minion waves spawn every 30 seconds would let you know that you got 2-3 waves until it goes off CD.

It's up to you on how you want to make use of this information. It can be having a clearer idea of the poke window until a key ability is off CD or the time until they can flee using another key ability, etc.

Everytime I look at the LoL Boards the top post is always something along the lines of "Game is unfun too much damage". Supported by claims of Runes Reforged being the root problem and games being decided in 5 mins with 25 mins of getting stomped. I kinda believe it but I want to know if a bigger sample than the 60+ people in boards agree.
