LEC Remote Broadcast - THANK YOU!!

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 12:49 PM PDT

We are halfway through the first day of LEC Remote broadcast and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at home watching, to everyone that put this together.

I'm sitting at home playing a coordinating role today honestly I'm just blown away at the response from the viewers at home and even more impressed by the production team. We started investigating how to produce the LEC from home, and keep all the major elements of the broadcast so that it was still LEC Quality. At the time of posting we have completed two games and I'm happy with the current state. For the first ever remote broadcast of LEC planned with less than 4 days, relying on our home internet connections and with so many different variables.

It isnt a perfect broadcast, and we are working through audio issues as well as new slew of technical challenges to work through. I'm optimistic that we can increase the quality and address these problems one by one over the coming shows. Please be patient with us as we keep addressing them, but also understand how technically challenging this entire show is with all the team houses and remote broadcast staff.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that put this together behind the scenes, so that I and everyone watching can have some awesome EU League to watch from home!

PS. I wanted to share some behind the scenes photos of how we are working remotely!

Announcing the Chronoshift Project: A way to play old versions of League of Legends

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 11:44 AM PDT

Chronoshift is work-in-progress server software for old versions of League of Legends. Supported game clients can connect and talk to this server just like they did when the official servers for those versions were online. This enables players to experience the game as it was at the time.

Currently it only works with a specific game client from 2010, but with some effort it can be modified to support other versions from around that time (2009-2011), and further efforts could push the compatibility to slightly newer versions (2014).

Some features of the aforementioned game client along with the server include:

    • All champions up through Trundle, 65 in total!
    • All 14 summoner spells in the game at the time
    • 5 fully functional maps!
      • Summoner's Rift
      • Summoner's Rift Autumn version
      • Summoner's Rift Winter version
      • Twisted Treeline
      • Proving Grounds (Tutorial)
    • All items!

As stated at the beginning of this thread, the server is not finished yet (although it's quite far along in development), this means some things are not as good as they need to be in order to allow playing a full, enjoyable match. These include, in ascending order of importance:

    • Runes and masteries (most of the groundwork for them is done, so this isn't much of a problem)

    • Performance (works quite well actually, but the code hasn't been written with performance as a priority and it can probably run even better :D), occasional bugs and crashes

    • Pathfinding (basic pathing that ignores walls works, but it doesn't take into account other units, making units go through each other and minions stack in the same spot. This is the most serious issue)

Here are some screenshots of the game client running and connected to the server: https://imgur.com/a/fJufOuI

We've been working on this project for several years, and we're excited to share it with the community. That said, we're a very small team and we can't really support letting everyone play immediately, especially with the state its in. At this point we're assessing interest and looking for ways to get feedback.

To answer some concerns you may have, here is extra information about Chronoshift:

    • To be absolutely clear, this is not an official project, nor endorsed by the original game developer
    • The server has been written from scratch and is not based on other similar projects
    • This is separate from the current official game client, and would not modify or interfere with it

We're really looking forward to reading what you think regarding this project!

EDIT: To clear up something that seems to come up a lot:

    • This isn't going to be a 'private server' in the same sense that WoW servers are. This will be something that people will likely host themselves. We're going to do some online testing first to iron out the bugs and avoid floating a ton of buggy versions out there, but this won't be a private server. We cant afford to run one anyways :D

If you'd like to keep up with the project we now have Discord and Twitter accounts!

Is Swain not ment to be a solo laner anymore?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:54 AM PDT

Currently Swain is mostly played as a support. He was changed recently in a way that doesn't favor him in solo lanes anymore. His laning is very weak and in the support role he can farm the enemy bot laners for stacks far easier then he can in top or mid lane.

But Swain doesn't seem to be a champion designed for the support role. He never was a support before his rework and he was clearly released as a solo laner.

So I would love to see some quality of live changes for our Noxian overlord which might stir him towards a carry lane rather then being the off carry in the bot lane.

RiotMAX explains some of the new rules implemented for online pro play (streaming, isolation, ability to pause and restore game)

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 11:25 AM PDT

    From Twitter:

Maintaining our high standards for competitive integrity in this online scenario is of course difficult. But it is incredibly important to us. I am threading a few examples of how we are ensuring a fair competition in this thread for everyone's visibility:

    1. Teams are streaming live video and audio feeds from the practice rooms in their facilities which are observed by our referees. Teams have installed video capturing software so our Head Referee can evaluate potential bugs and assess Chronobreak scenarios.

    2. Players are isolated in their Practice Rooms (except for the Coach during Pick&Ban) and have back-up PCs and peripherals ready in the Practice Room. We put additional protections and security systems in place to protect against any attempts to mess with the game or DDoS attacks.

    3. The broadcast is delayed to ensure noone can even have information which they could be assisting the team with. After the games we are conducting spot checks on the PCs via remote control to ensure the game has not been tampered with.

    4. Last but not least Codename Rank-4 Chronobreak: We have found a way to pause a game, preserve it and potentially continue at a later time/date in case a major issue out of the teams' control hits (like a major power or ISP outage).

    5. We are playing on a dedicated Tournament Realm and while ping may vary marginally e.g. between OG in Copenhagen and the other teams here in Berlin our internal systems and tests ensure it is within a reasonable range.

The TL:DR is Chrome switched their coding for authentication and it has to be from the same site you try to login to, but Riot didn't update the process on their end to comply with Chrome's change. If you're using Chrome and can't stay logged in, go to:

    chrome://flags/#same-site-by-default-cookies

and turn the first option to "disabled". You'll be able to stay logged in now.

    The state of midlane.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 11:34 AM PDT

So, I try to form my opinions strictly off of looking at the stats, and I've been a bit bothered by something I keep seeing.

Aurelion sol has a 0.7% pickrate. He was nerfed with he reached a 55% winrate.

Garen midlane has a 1.6% pickrate -- more than twice that -- with a 54.5% winrate.

Then there's Kled, who has the same pickrate as Aurelion Sol in the midlane but with a 56% winrate.

And Nocturne, who's traditionally a jungler, has a 2.22% pickrate in the midlane with a 54% winrate.

In short, it seems like Riot allows champions to be overpowered in the midlane as long as it isn't their main role, even when their midlane pickrate is higher than many mages, so it isn't just small fringe communities playing these picks. Maybe it's just thought that people won't notice? But they have higher pickrates AND drastically higher winrates than a number of mage laners.

    My other concern:

Of the top 10 most popular midlaners, yasuo and assassin have taken the top ~8 slots for months.

Despite this, many of them sit around 53-54% winrates regularly. Diana and Katarina are especially egregious, having ~53.5% winrates with MASSIVE pick and ban rates for months and months on end. But Riot won't even talk about them.

Instead of nerfing the overtuned AP assassins, Riot decided to match AD assassins against them by overtuning Dirk, which now gives 10 lethality for 50 gold.

So I don't think AD assassins are overpowered against other assassins -- dirk was buffed so they'd be able to fight them -- but it left mages in the dust. Mages have no option to itemize against Katarina/Diana, and, unlike AP assassins, they can't rush armguard against AD assassins because they need mana.

I think this is the explanation for the above kled/garen winrates. Toplaners being picked mid are now excelling so much because midlane is an assassin matchup almost every single game, and a lot of toplaners can dismantle assassins in the 1v1. But these toplaners don't get beaten by mages -- mages are just kind of...left in the dust.

    Final point:

Riot has been buffing mages over and over and over again to try to force them to be viable against the assassins they've powercrept, but it isn't working. Xerath received 2 massive rounds of buffs, and barely broke a 50% winrate. Ziggs is still nonexistent despite massive buffs. Anivia's still too vulnerable now that a bunch of assassins have hard CC to interrupt her ulti for some reason (Ekko, Qiyana, Sylas, Diana, Kassadin...) Veigar is so vulnerable midlane that he's just picked botlane now.

    Summary:

    1. Riot seems to want to keep AP assassins overpowered, and refuses to nerf them despite massive pickrates and winrates.
    2. To that end, Riot is trying to buff other things up to their level instead of nerfing them. They've overtuned Dirk (10 lethality for 50 gold) and now they keep trying to buff mages' offense, but it isn't working. They still face an assassin that one shots them every game. Instead, it's just making everyone into glass cannons, with mages being overtuned to match the assassins Riot has left overtuned.
    3. Because assassins are so popular, it's hard to have this discussion without inevitably angering the people playing the champions that are overperforming. I'm trying to say this lightly. Please don't feel targeted just because your picks fall into one of the categories I've mentioned.

So, in conclusion, I personally think Riot should stop trying these obscure buffs for mages, and simply nerf the top AP assassins. A protobelt nerf would help as well (Sylas and Ekko having 3-4 dashes is disgusting.)

Then, don't nerf AD assassins, but simply revert the recent Dirk buff, which was given just to help AD assassins contend with the overpowered AP assassins (and which made Talon into a menace.)

I personally feel this would help suppress the power creep they're pushing hard right now while finally allowing mages to feel viable as well as allowing the ADC role to feel less constantly threatened by assassins every single game. Not only this, but it'd help with the faux perception of AP items being overtuned, which is driven not by mages, but by AP assassins abusing the items which are balanced around their weaker mage users.

    Source for my statistics.

I know one of the reasons they put them in the game was to add something more to the list of things the boxes could drop but it's kind of annoying getting an S then open a box and get the dabbing pengu or a ward.

And yeah i know we are getting this for free but everyone have been complaining of how little orange essence we are getting lately and i'm part of everyone.

Crown Joins OZ Gaming, a Korean Challengers Team

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 02:25 AM PDT

    https://twitter.com/kenzi131/status/1240927221352554496

Crown, formerly of CLG, has joined a Korean Challengers Team, OZ Gaming. OZ Gaming is currently last place (8th) in the league, with a record of 1-6, with players Soar - BroCColi/Juhan - Ian - Pilot - Motive. The 7th place team, Jin Air Greenwings, has a game record of 3-4.

Very curious to see what this does to both Crown and OZ Gaming. Obviously not very optimistic considering his latest performance, but here's hoping that this can be beneficial to both parties.
