A look into Garena Viet Nam's predatory business practices

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 03:44 AM PDT

    Part I: Introduction

In July 22, 2010, Riot announced their partnership with Garena, a " digital services company that engages in gaming, eSports, eCommerce and digital finance, primarily focusing on the South East Asian area". It was founded in Singapore in 2009 by Forrest Li and is the distributor of the game League of Legends in several countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In this post I will focus on the Vietnamese branch and their exploitative business models

Part II: Garena's blatant and unabashed attempts to cash in on their community (or How to milk your players)

1.1: Events after events after events after events after events after events

Upon logging in, you are immediately welcomed by this, one of a dozen of variants of sales and/or minigames that Garena has to offer.

From direct discounts to "interactive" events that all boils down to purchasing/using RP to earn point/lootboxes, using blinking buttons, colorful backgrounds and massive countdown timers, they are all designed to prey on the player's psyche.
    Example of a recent event.

1.2: Temporary locking skins behind events

The majority of events hosted by Garena doesnt simply offer discounted items, but often time is the only way for players to purchase the newest skins. With each event lasting anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, people are forced to either wait or participate in the luck-based games to get their hands on their favorite skins.

1.3: Permanently locking skins (just because)
According to my knowledge, from as far back as 2016 with the introduction of the original Worldbreakers set, Garena has been in the habit of locking a number of skins behind timegated and (obviously) paid events. This includes all 7 of the Worldbreakers skins, Nightbringer Vladimir, Mecha Asol, Freljord Sylas, Pulsefire Thresh and potentially other skins that I have missed.

The events range widely, from purchasing specific amounts of RP for the Worldbreaker skins, participating in a random "ticket" drawing event for the Thresh and Sylas skins, to simply buying the really expensive version of the event pass, effectively forcing the normal pass onto players.

2: Price chart is just a suggestion anyway

Back in January 14th 2019, Garena Singapore made an update to the Shells(Garena's own currency) to RP conversion rate, as well as fixed pricing to match global skin prices. This update was not applied to Garena Viet Nam. With the conversion table as a benchmark, let's take a look into the market section of the launcher.

As you can see, skin prices varies greatly. Epic tier one, priced at 1350RP or 250RP according to the table, are tagged anywhere from 210, 250, 310 and up to 396rp. While here, you can see that Nightbringer Lee Sin, an Epic skin, is priced HIGHER than a Legendary ones, such as Nightbringer Soraka. This ridiculous pricing is often seen in skins for more popular champions, such as Riven, Yasuo, Akali and Lee Sin.
The majority of Legendary skins are also marked up by 99RP, much higher than the default 500RP price that was applied to other regions

3: You get to be Legendary, you get to be Legendary, EVERYONE GETS TO BE LEGENDARY

If you check the English client, you will see that there are only 37 skins marked as Mythic and 59 skins marked as Legendary. But when you open the Vietnamese version, suprise suprise, you can find up to 45 Mythic skins and ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE Legendaries.
This does not only make it significantly harder to claim skins with shards, but also generates fake hype and exciment for uninformed players whenever they get a "Legendary" skin shard.

    Part III: Conclusion

Garena is nothing more than a avaracious company whose sole purpose is to milk the players dry. The extend of their predatory business pratices are intensifying since late 2019, which coincides with the recent net loss of over $1 billion dollars of their parent company.

I understand that this post may not bring about any consequential changes, but still wishes to partially enlight the global audience to the greediness to this dumpster fire of a company

ADC, Jungle and Top mains should stop arguing. I think you're all right. All your roles are shit

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:28 AM PDT

    You see it every two seconds. XXX SCREAMS "It feels shit to play XXX role". But then YYY role pops up and argues that;

"NO, XXX, your role CAN'T be shit because MY role is shit"

Hot take: All your roles are shit.

Now I'm going to start out by talking about Jungle, because it's an easy example to use for my comment. ADC and Top mains, just chill for a bit and hear me out. Don't worry, I'm won't try to make you sympathise with junglers. Your role is still shit bro. I'm here for you, really.

Your role suck for the exact same reason that Jungle was shit in early season 1-2. Back then Junglers would spam gank because there was no point in clearing camps. Remember that? (For anyone who doesn't remember that, check out the first couple minutes of Skill Capped's video on 'How Riot Ruined the Jungle')

One of the most optimal paths back then was for Jarvan to do a single camp. That's right. Just one. Then J4 would proceed to spam slam his pole into the lanes closest to him, repeatedly. After that, Jarvan would take a quick break and do one more and maybe, just MAYBE if he was feeling particularly gluttonous he would do two camps, before flexing his pole into another lane again. When people say that 'Junglers were basically just supports back then', they aren't joking.

    The Problem:

Because Junglers spent the entire early game ganking, every other lane was at their mercy. You would live and die by the Jungle, and it got to a point where it felt as though you had very little control over YOUR lane.

Inversely, because Junglers spent the entire early game ganking, come mid-late the game was pretty much entirely in their teammates hands. They may have had godly agency early, but come late-game all they could really do is offer thoughts and prayers.

This created a loop of suck for everyone. Junglers couldn't just farm their camps, because they weren't really worth farming. So they had to spam gank, which left everyone frustrated because it felt as though they didn't have any agency or control over the game. Which is technically the truth, because at certain points they really didn't because an outside influence was always fucking them. OPTIONS weren't really there. Eventually things changed, camps were buffed over time, the Jungle was refocused towards Junglers, and the infamous feral flare patch arose. But that's another story. Relevant, but I don't think it's that necessary to go much further on that topic for now.

So that's it for my Jungle Ted talk. Thanks for sticking it out this far.

Season 1-2 Jungle state reflects the state of the entire game rn

Now, personally I think this is reflective of the entire current state of the game. Just how in season 1-2 Junglers couldn't be strong through jungling, I think now we have a case where people can't be strong just through their own role.

This means that they HAVE to interfere in other roles because their agency in their own role is limited.

Which is why I think the Roam and help your team rhetoric is actually really, really shitty.

Go to summoner-school right now and I GUARANTEE that there will be at least one thread of a Top laner crying that he can't carry games. And the advice that people will give him is this:

ROAM AND HELP UR TEAM - TRANSLATE UR LEAD BRO

It's not wrong advice. It's good advice for the current state of the game. But it's diametrically opposed to the advice that I used to get back when I joined the game:

Stay top and get strong, force a fight where you can get something good, and end.

You see this reflected in the use of summoner spells. Even into pro play, most every Top Laner ran ignite back then. The point of it was to Play TOP, WIN TOP, AND WIN THROUGH YOUR OWN ROLE.

Yes, there was teamplay. Yes, there were times where you would group and fight. Yes, there were times where it was optimal to roam bot. Yes, there were times where it was optimal to take TP and make a teleport play Botlane. But you didn't have to. In fact, some champions couldn't pull it off well, so they just didn't bother.

So, just like back in season 2 where you have situation where Junglers couldn't be strong by jungling, so too do you now have a situation where people can't be strong through only their own role.

So, instead, they have to interfere other peoples role.

This leads to ADC getting buttfucked every single damn game.

I honestly feel sorry for you guys. I can't imagine the mental resilience it takes to play your role. I know that when I'm playing, I've constantly got one eye on your lane. I'm constantly watching that Kai'sa's ass, waiting or the opportune moment to pull the trigger and hit her up. Doesn't matter if I'm mid, top or Jungle. I am watching. And I am coming. Maybe not now, maybe later. I'm just waiting for the moment where I can make you hurt the most.

Don't hate me for it though, I don't really have a choice. I kind of have to. There's a lot of resources that can be gained from influencing a lane with two people. Then to top it off you've got Dragon right next to you...You've also got the weakest turret in the game...And, finally, ever since Riot buffed supports back in season 6? Was it? You've been the most influential role in the game. How can you not be when the support is a second mid-laner, and ADC is the hardest scaling role in the game. It would be beyond stupid of me to leave you alone.

Which leads to the season 1-2 J4 situation. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

ADCs feel like their role is shit because they have no control over their lane.

Top feels like their role is shit because they have no control through their lane, so they have feel as though they're constantly at the mercy of other lanes.

Jungle feels like their role is shit because they have no control through Jungle (Farming was nerfed to the ground in season 7), so they have to spam gank to make an impact, and hope that they can trust in their team to do the right thing by them in return.

    In closing:

You have a lot of people who are frustrated because it doesn't' feel like they can play their own game, instead it feels like they're playing for someone else.

The diametric opposition to this exists in the form of things like Season 4 Feral Flare Yi. For anyone who doesn't remember, Yi would stay in his jungle for 20 minutes, then walk out and end the game. That was it. No exaggeration. You would genuinely think that Yi was AFK if you didn't check his jungle and see that his camps were always down.

Similarly, you had the patch where supports were buffed, and it became the case that the botlane who won lane would just single-handedly win the game. Singlehandedly. Even if other lanes tried to interfere Bot could just fight back and win. Or, the Protect the ADC patches where you picked something like Kog/Tristana/Twitch, farmed, and just straight up annihilated everybody while spamming laugh.

So you can see, there's a nuance to this. Too far in either direction can lead to a bad experience. Too little interaction is unhealthy, but so is too much interaction.

In 2018 Riot admitted that they had made the game too team based and said they'd scale back on it.

I don't think they've done nearly enough. There's too much forced interaction, and too much co-dependence. Co-dependence is just as unhealthy as PVE and needs to be fixed ASAP.

Unfortunately, codependence, while incredibly frustrating to deal with, is great for the big screen.

In comparison, PVE or independent play doesn't make LCS BIG PLAYS, but it can actually be really fun to play. Anyone who's raced to see how many flare stacks they can get, played raid-boss Shyvana, or machine-gun Kog knows what I'm talking about. Ofc, probs not as fun for the team your clapping, but at the very least they could have done it to you. Trick screaming 'LATA BITCHES' while being 5 levels above his bot and having 50+ flare stacks may have been a thing, but so too were the Fabbyyyy and Gosu highlight reels.

    TLDR:

Season 1-2 Junglers were extremely codependent because their only option was to spam gank. This made their early game agency godly at the cost of making everyone else feel like they lacked control over their own lane. In return, come mid-late the tables would flip where the Jungler would now have little-to-no control, and essentially be at the mercy of his team.

This is exactly what has been happening to the game as whole over the past few seasons. People don't feel as though they can win just by playing their own role, so at a certain point their attention is dedicated towards ruining another role because that's the only way they can feel as though they have agency.

The most annoying part about Veigar is that his cage hitbox stays longer than the visual

I swear to god soo many times i'm like : I'm going to break this midget ankles once i get out of here and when the cage is gone i start running at him just to get stunned because the cage wasn't actually gone.

I don't know if it has to do with the ability itself or if it is some kind of server spaghetti but i don't see why people don't talk about it more often.

I made a Project Irelia Fanart!

    Project Irelia

Another Fanart of the best waifu in LoL.

I wanted to go with more of a Splashart vibe this time, also practicing a lot of stuff to be able to bring my Visual Novel idea to life (Visual Novel about Irelia and Akali in the Project wolrd)

If you have any advice or comment i'd be more than glad to read it <3

If you guys want to download this to use it as wallpaper, i posted a bigger resolution Here.

Intentionally losing games to stay in lower ELO?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Just got demolished in a low elo game by someone who I assumed was a smurf. I checked his match history to confirm (and make myself feel better about it lol), and he goes on 10 game winstreaks where he gets 20+ kills with usually 0 deaths, then another 10 game streak where he goes 0/10/0. It seems clear to me that he's intentionally throwing those games to keep his elo low. Is this seriously a thing people do? Is it a reportable offense?

I just reached 30 lvl and played 5 rankeds. I want to quit. Help

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:37 AM PDT

So my gf introduced me a couple of weeks ago to this cute lovely game.

I main mf because that the champ she showed me how to play. So whenever the games start I see whether jungler needs help or team want to invade and then I come back to my lane. I try to get 1300 gold to buy a sword and then come back if the situation on the lane allows me to.So after 86 games and having ~50k maestry points I decided to play ranked game to see where the game will place me.

I started yesterday and was in insta shock during first game's loading screen when I noticed players with 200-300 lvls and silver/golden ranks. I got flammed so bad I wanted to puke. I felt completely useless.

Same thing happened for the next 4 games, 2 of which I've won but I felt like a trash. All of these 5 games I got flammed - and I don't blame them because I was indeed useless. Just flaming seems to be an essential perk at least 1 player must have and use.

My stats. Notice last 5 ranked games and games I played before

    https://eune.op.gg/summoner/userName=GeRog3n

So after 5 rankeds - I never want to play lol again after seeing people wishing me all the worst things in the world (kinda funny tho) because I got assigned to the level I have never been even close to. I watch guides on youtube, check builds and trying to play safe but what discourages me the most from playing another 5 ranked games is peoples' attidute in the game (after +3000 hours in csgo I can say that community there is not even close to the lol one). What am I supposed to do? Change role/back to normals/keep trying?

    Champion select swap issues

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 12:36 PM PDT

So my friends and I are currently playing Clash.

We picked the champions for eachother to get the priority champions first, you know, so they wont get picked or banned.

When the midlaner and jungler were swapping, it just didnt work. Our midlaner couldnt swap with the jungler. He couldnt fix his runes or his summoner spells. So we basically had a trundle jungle with comet, no smite, and not a jungle main. I think it's pretty bullshit that they're still hosting clash even tho they have such issues
