Getting older has made me realize how beyond silly raging is even in ranked

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT

I started playing this game back in season 1 when I was 20 years old. 10 years later I am now 30 and still playing from time to time. Although I am not as mature as I assumed I would be by the time I reached 30 I have to say I have changed a lot since I first started playing this game a decade ago.

After starting the weekend in gold 3 I decided to play some games Friday, Saturday & Sunday. I did finally get promoted all the way to gold 2 last night! (lol) so obviously a beyond successful "climb". But this is what really has stuck out to me over the years and especially last night.

    1. When people are playing bad they know they are playing bad. Telling them how bad their playing doesn't help but just makes them want the game to be over quicker and may make them not want to try anymore killing your teams chances for a comeback.

    2. Telling somehow how bad they are when you are the same rank (and not a smurf) is beyond hilarious. Think about it..... YOU ARE THE SAME RANK. So if they by definition are shit.... then logically you have to come to the same conclusion about yourself. I had so many people tell me this weekend when I was playing bad or just not at the level they wanted how shit I am. But most the time I was a higher rank than them with many less games played.... lmfao. It's just so funny and your not going to have people take you seriously when you talk like that.

    3. Even if you are a smurf flaming people in ranked is bullshit. Actually it's even more bullshit. You are the one in the wrong smurfing in the first place and too big of a B to play on your main. Luckily most actual smurfs don't say anything because they know this and are just trying to get their new account to their actual rank quickly and not there to stomp on lower rank players and brag.. The "smurfs" I am referring to are people who have alt accounts in pretty much the same elo they already in or slightly higher but pretend they are Gods lol. Those people truly make me laugh.

    4. Pinging is fine. Hell sometimes you need to spam ping danger or missing so your team actually pays attention. And obviously there's the meme or ????? pings when people mess up we see especially when high elo players stream. But in reality if you spam people over the smallest things constantly all that is going to lead to is your team muting your pings and muting you...... Plus they might get frustrated and play worse in the process.

    5. People take breaks. roughly 95% of us are plat 4 or lower. Hell top 1% of players are roughly currently D3 or higher. Most of us we may play the game a lot but we are not here to go pro. So yes... people get rusty... might miss some patches, part of a season etc. Just assuming everyone is going hard every game with their one trick champions is just not reality. It may be frustrating but it's reality.

I went hard on WoW classic for like 9 months. In that time I hardly played League. I can definitely say i've gotten worse in that time. I'm slowly getting back to my old skill level of season 9 but it can take time especially for people who don't routinely play a lot. I know ranked is frustrating when it puts rusty players in your games, but it's just how the game works. The game doesn't lower mmr for inactivity and most ranks don't even have a rank decay anymore (even though again that doesn't affect mmr). So you are going to have people in your games who take breaks and you may catch them when they are first coming back.

Look I've been there. I've flammed my teammates, i've done the pings, i've pretended to be better than I actually am. It's all sooooo fucking dumb and laughable. League is a game... it's supposed to be fun. If your not having fun you should take a break or stop playing. Taking out your frustrations on others just makes you look like the idiot you are role playing as.

Edit: Not going to lie can't believe how much this blew up. I truly expected mayybee 10 up vote max and for the post to die rather quickly. It's amazing to hear others feel the same way and also those that don't. Anyways thank you all for sharing your thoughts and stories they've been fun to read. As for my ranked 0-2 tonight :((. Ah well tough luck sometimes. We had a chance to win both games but I didn't really play very well so I can't complain. Only "toxic" thing I really saw was our Jax kept trying to FF every 5 mins at 15 mins in my second game. Unsure why... he was against Khaz top and destroying him. /shrug. Think if he focused up instead of pouted it would have helped us a lot couldn't figure him out lol.

The idea of losers que is just "Elo hell" with a fresh coat of clown paint and here's why

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 03:40 PM PDT

The idea that riot will intentionally sabotage your games with an algorithm that detects loss streak teammates and uses them to weigh down a high win rate player, or to keep you in a certain elo range so you don't climb is patently absurd for a number of reasons.

First of all, let's talk about logistically how this would even be possible. This is Riot games we're talking about here. If Riot's client were a person I'd shoot it in the face in hopes of sparing humanity whatever biblical plague clearly was afflicting it. Nunu has had invisible snow balls for years. We've all duo'd with someone and been auto filled to each others primaries in a lobby. League of Legends as a piece of software is kept together by the iron willed prayers of southern baptists, duct tape, and Big League Chew chunks of gum. To insist that these monkeys banging military helicopters with sticks and rocks could build a sophisticated algorithm to make losers que even exist is laughable.

But fine, let's assume that Trydamere sold his soul to an eldritch being living in the sewers of LA and has spontaneously birthed this code into existence. Why would Riot even want that? I've seen plenty of claims that it keeps people playing. A player wants to chase an elo benchmark and Riot knows they will stop playing when they reach it, so they stop them from reaching via losers ques.

There's literally no reason to do this. News flash; you'll all hit a skill wall eventually and stop doing well in your games by lack of your own ability. Riot doesn't need to do shit for that to occur. Give me SKT wolf as my support and double lift will still shit on me in the bot lane, I promise.

Another argument I read often is that the win loss streaks combined with the corresponding match making results are impossible to explain via randomness, ala "THEIR team gets the master tier smurfs while MY team gets the 14 losses in a row Yasuo one trick. That happened to me 8 times in a row, that can't possibly be random!" Any string of games that forces you to have an absurdly long loss/win streak can't possibly be the result of random chance and must be orchestrated behind the scenes in some capacity is what the argument generally boils down to. There is too much coincidence for it to be coincidence.

Here's a little story that may shed some light on this natural human tendency to fail to understand randomness; a stats professor tells his students to flip a coin 100 times in a row and record the results. Students 1-5 are diligent and do just that, honestly recording the results. Students 6-10 are feeling a bit lazy and just make up results, making sure they definitely look nice and random. Students 6-10 turn in their work and receive failing grades because the prof knows they lied. How does he know? They never had strings where 4-5 heads or 4-5 tails came up in a row. Usually, the most extreme string of flips the average person can imagine is 3 times in a row.

Arguing that having feeding teammates 14 games in a row is impossible and it therefore must be losers que is not appreciating randomness at all. In fact, it's actually quite likely given how many people play this game. There are literally millions of people playing 14 games in a row. It would be seriously more shocking if none of them lost all 14 in a row. Think of it this way; let's say every game is balanced to be 50-50 for you to win or lose. I know it's usually more like 45-55 or 47-53 but let's just roll with 50-50 for simplicity. Losing 14 fair games in a row only happens 0.0061% of the time. Wow! Impossible for that to happen to me by sheer chance, you cry out. For 1 million players, 6,100 people will lose 14 games in a row. That's a very memorable result, so for all those it happens to, they'll talk about it. Now everyone thinks this is some rampant problem, when, in reality, it's quite expected and ordinary.

So to sum up the case for losers que existing, we have a lack of ability from Riot to create it, a lack of motivation for them to create it, and a viable alternative explanation for "abnormal" results we see in solo que. I'll finish with a historical comparison.

I've been playing this game since season 2. Back then, many people were convinced that elo hell existed. For those out of the loop, the argument essentially postulated that it was impossible to climb at certain ranks if your account got stuck because every game you would always get a troll, or an inter, or the classic "bot lane feeders" on your team, simply by virtue of you being silver with a high game volume. Obviously, this argument is absurd because a good player can always overcome bad teammates in the long run with enough skill and game volume, because how would anyone ever climb rank if that wasn't true? There are many, many other ways to debunk this urban conspiracy theory that I won't go into here. To me, this idea isn't any different than losers que. Accept randomness, take person responsibility, and stop trying to find reasons for your inability to climb other than your own skill.

Edit: Someone made an ELO hell argument so I'm just putting this explanation here for why it's not true: Think about it this way; every game you get a nuclear bad teammate. We'll call them a troll for shorthand. Factually speaking, every person in a group of 10, minus yourself, has a set chance of being a troll based on the elo you are in. If 10% of bronze players are trolls, then there should be at least 1 troll per game. Since you never troll, there are 4 slots on your team which could get a troll, and 5 on the enemy team that could be a troll. Thus, over a long period of time, the enemy team will get more trolls than you do, since 5 is bigger than 4. So that isn't a factor holding you back in the long run.

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 05:50 AM PDT

And no, this has nothing to do with his abilities, damage values or other absolutely meaningless shit like that. This is far more serious.

In one of his voice lines he says that he always saves one shot for himself, just in case. In another voice line he says that his guns run on fury, and that he never runs out.

So why, and HOW does he save a shot for himself if he never runs out of ammo. This means that he'd either be extremely stupid or a slimy liar, and he doesn't really strike me as either.

I propose that his "These guns run on fury, and I never run out" voice line is changed to "these guns run on fury, and I never run out unless my soul is about to get captured by a certain green wraith with a lantern, for which case I have this nice glock with one bullet in it in my pocket".

A simple change which would make Lucian feel so much better to play.

Everyone saying "losers queue" right now is kind of hilarious

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 09:20 AM PDT

Because the concept of "losers queue" has been around for a long time. However, whenever a big streamer mentions it, boom -

    • It's frequently the topic of reddit posts
    • It's what people complain about after they lose a game
    • People in my friends list have it on their status

It's crazy how fast these terms get popularized from "x diff" to "dog player" to everything in between, streamers play a huge role in the blame game + the toxicity meta in league.

NA Production/Stats Messed Up V1per’s winrate off Riven & gave him 22 extra losses randomly.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:26 PM PDT

Broadcast out him at 22-62 on other champs but he's at 22-40. Still not great but not nearly as bad. It's extra confusing that no one thought they looked off just by thinking about how long he's been in the league.

I think mistakes like this are a big oof. V1per is already having a rough split, they did a piece to make him look like a one trick AND they got the stats wrong so he looked worse. WTF LCS?!?

They claim the segment was to make it clear how good he is at Riven but it felt more like attacking his champ pool to me. If LCS gives him the reputation of "can only play Riven lul" it could actually ruin his career. Teams should do better scouting but some don't.

I'm a V1per fan & even though this has been a rough year I still think he'll bounce back. Even if you don't like him send him a supportive tweet or two because he's pretty down.

Using incorrect stats (that don't even make sense if you take a second to think) to call a struggling player a one trick is just sad.

Been running Vi top with Phase Rush, convinced it's amazing. Here's my justification.

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:19 AM PDT

A while ago I was playing a lot of pre-nerf rework Voli top, doing pretty well in general around gold mmr. This one game though, I faced a Gragas running Phase Rush and just got stomped. I had heard of it but never seen it before. The hit and run playstyle really shuts down aggressive fighters very effectively.

If you're not familiar with the pick, Gragas has a quick 3 hit combo in q-e-w that allows him to pop in for a burst of damage every time Phase Rush is up and then run away hasted with slow resistance. You do that a few times with essentially no opportunity for return damage and then use it aggressively once your health advantage is big enough. With the cooldown being 15 seconds on Phase Rush you can really get the upper hand on a lane fast. So I took it up recently and yep, it's a pretty strong pick. He's essentially impossible to kill in a lot of what should be losing matchups.

The only thing that frustrated me was his huge E hitbox colliding with minions. It makes it kind of hard to aggress on ranged tops or people who just ignore you and decide to hang back and farm it out. So I started experimenting with other champs that have a quick 3 hit combo to abuse the same playstyle, but with a more reliable gap closer.

Maokai was my first try, and it is definitely super strong in lane. Stronger even than aftershock in the 1v1 in many cases. With W auto Q, or W proccing bami's cinder then q, you can abuse safe Phase Rush trades into aggressive champs that would normally just chase you down and kill you through aftershock. The problem with Maokai is that you definitely miss aftershock the later the game goes.

So then I tried Vi because I know she runs Phase in the jungle sometimes, and holy crap does it feel strong. I usually play support or jungle so sometimes I'm not particularly good in really scrappy solo lanes but with Phase Rush Vi it's like I've just had the upper hand in every single matchup I've played. Only done it maybe a dozen times so far, so small sample size, but often it's like it's so strong it just feels unfair. Champs without a ton of hard CC can just literally do nothing.

It's like hit and run Gragas but better. Q goes through minions, travels further and hits a crazy low cooldown at rank 5. Sure, the windup is telegraphed but it is still not an easy thing to dodge. Her Q automatically lines up a follow-up auto on the champ you hit, then you aa reset with e. This combo is super fast, procs denting blows, your passive shield, AND phaserush all within a split second. You knock up, chunk for huge damage and zoom away with a 3 second ghost and a 15% max health shield.

The cooldown of her passive lines up really well with Phase Rush so you basically get to do this every 15 seconds with a big fat shield to mitigate any return trading. And her dps and kill pressure once you have the upper hand is FAR superior to Gragas or Maokai. You might think she lacks sustain compared to those two, but she has the highest health regen in the game at all levels (except gnar I think), and this is doubled when building Titanic first. Also, her shield has a ton of uptime.

I've been building Titanic into Iceborn most games and that two item spike with the stickyness and waveclear just makes her a side lane monster. Follow up with Cleaver for 40% CDR and some tank stuff and she's fantastic in teamfights as well. And unlike Maokai, I don't really feel like I would rather have Aftershock in most scenarios. She's more effective running through the backline destroying carries with dps and Phase makes her really hard to lock down.

Obviously a downside to this pick is if you whiff your q, you're now a sitting duck in a bad position. You can still get in 3 autos really quick with E resets to proc your shield and Phase Rush to run away, but you're probably going to end up taking some trade damage as opposed to almost none if you had landed your Q properly.

The only matchup I can really see maybe being hard is Jax? I think his E and the ability to jump after you with a stun would kind of shut down the whole pick. I'm just guessing on that one, but I have been banning him when I play this so I don't know for sure.

Try it out though, I feel like it's extremely hard to deal with for a lot of meta top champs.

The damage from Fizz' Playful/Trickster is not really logical

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 02:58 AM PDT

Fizz, who probably weighs less than 40 kilograms, deals 270 + 75% AP when he lands on top of you. He isn't even pulling off a Link downwards aerial with his weapon - it's just his bare weight.

Meaning that this freaky fishguy deals more damage by dropping his wet fins into your face than by ramming his trident through your body, penetrating vital organs (70 + 100% AD + 55% AP).

I got rid of physics in school as soon as I was able to, but you don't have to be the reincarnation of Mozart to realize that this is like a Swiss money printing machine - it doesn't make any cents.

Or is this a Mario/Crash thing and jumping onto enemies deals extra damage in League? (This would actually explain why Sett's ult is so devastating!) If so, I demand large portions of Gnar's damage output getting shifted into his leaps.
