PSA: Stay away from ProGuides' shady business practices

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 03:29 PM PDT

So I just received a text today notifying me that ProGuides has charged me 96 USD (85 EUR) for an annual subscription.

Since I have only used their service a couple of times (last time in April) I had of course completely forgotten about my subscription, so I immediately contact them, asking if it was possible to get a refund.

    They respond:

Although this, of course, is obviously a botted answer, it doesn't address my refund request at all.

Non-the-less, I provide them with the info they need to verify my subscription; while correcting their incorrect statement, about the subscription costing 60 USD (I was charged 96 USD).

Take a look at the following response:

Again, the response from ProGuides completely fails to address my refund request, while giving a nice slap to the face, with a nice corporate description of their services, and a "one time courtesy of 3000 PG point bonus, worth 30 USD [!?!?!?]", so I can "get the most out of [their] amazing service".

    My goal with this post is twofold;

    1. A PSA to all current subscribers that ProGuides have raised their prices, and they will charge you without notifying you of the price increase.

    2. A PSA to all potential future subscribers of ProGuides; stay away from this site.

Despite having been a subscriber of theirs for a year now (I stopped playing recently), their site has been completely useless.

If you are above platinum, don't even bother paying for their services, you will improve with content that is free elsewhere. I have only used their website twice in the span of a year, where I hired "challenger" coaches, only to find out later that they are peak diamond 3 players.

    TLDR:

    1. Despite not using their service at all, ProGuides refuses to give refunds.

    2. They have raised their annual subscription rate, from 60 USD to 96 USD, without notifying their customers (edit: nor their customer support staff, as the first image shows :D)

    3. Stay away from ProGuides, as it is a shady website, with sub-par customer support, and sub-par coaching, that is freely available elsewhere.

    Thanks for reading.

Edit: A lot of replies have advised me to contact my bank and ask for a chargeback.

User /u/kleefchief has been extremely helpful by referring me to this website: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/index_en.htm

Paragraph 2 "If you bought a product or a service online or outside of a shop (by telephone, mail order, from a door-to-door salesperson), you also have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification."

Which I will use in my claim. This only applies within the EU afaik, but I hope this may help some of you out there that might have had some run-ins with ProGuides (or other online services for that matter) :)

Edit 2: LOL okay. I will put down my pitchfork. Thanks to reddit, without even contacting my bank or responding to ProGuides, I just received a mail telling me that I'm receiving a refund. I'm keeping this post up though, as it may hopefully be of use to others in the future. https://imgur.com/a/UtG4qGK

The C9 vs TSM analyst segment in yesterday's LCS countdown show was completely pointless and demonstrates how formulaic the LCS has become.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:57 AM PDT

30 minutes before the 1st LCS game of the day, there is the LCS countdown show where the analyst desk hype up the upcoming games. In yesterday's edition, they spent about 6 minutes or so talking about the C9 vs TSM matchup in detail. The problem is, they reused the EXACT same content and talking points (even down to the same wording and order!) later on, before the actual C9 vs TSM game, making the entire thing repetitive and just pointless.

To illustrate my point, see the comparison of the 2 segments in the table below with timestamps to the VODs. I put in quotes around the wordings that are exactly the same (or extremely similar) across both segments and in parentheses, the graphical aid that was reused. Play them side by side for about 10-15 seconds at a time and you will find it very uncanny.

Disclaimer: No, you are not hallucinating, these are 2 different VODs and it is not groundhog day.

Talking Point LCS Countdown C9 vs TSM pre-game
Dash talks about "the most iconic C9 roster that played yesterday" and how Licorice is the "transitional piece" from that roster to the current roster 2:06 4:56
MarkZ talks about how Licorice "is the only one that played with these guys" and how he has "dumpstered top lane" this split (with Licorice slides) 2:18 5:09
Dash transitions to the midlane, talks about how "Nisqy has been unsurprisingly dominant" and Bjergsen "has been unlocked" 3:38 6:40
Prolly further talks about Bjergsen and how he "has awakened" and "played TF and Azir last week" (with close-up shots of the players) 3:57 6:57
Crumbzz talks about Nisqy stats, how he is enabled by Blaber and how they try to emulate FPX (with mid lane matchup stats graphics) 4:27 7:40
MarkZ talks about Bjergsen's champion pool, composed of Fiddlesticks + "greedier champions" 5:39 8:45
Dash transitions to the bot lane matchup, says "they are 2 of the best western botlaners in the history of the game" 6:11 9:16
MarkZ talks about how "even Zven admits" that it's hard for him to show off in his games when he is "playing Ezreal and farming with Q's in lane"(with Zven's tweet shown at the bottom) 6:21 9:33

My question to the LCS broadcast team is this: what incentive do I have to watch the LCS countdown if you are just going to reuse the same segment less than 90 minutes later? And why did no one on the desk or the production side find it weird that the LCS talks about the exact same stuff with similar wording in 2 separate segments? This just reinforces the criticism made earlier in the split that the LCS is incredibly formulaic and scripted.

Things in League that keep me up at night

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:06 AM PDT

    1. Malzhar has a dagger strapped to his leg
    2. In Captain gangplank's skin, he peels an orange. In game, he shoves the thing in his mouth whole
    3. On the LoL website, Kled sees everyone as an enemy, including himself. His only labeled friend is Skarl. He values Skarl, the immortal lizard, more than his own life.
    4. In the wiki, its stated that mundo's favorite snacks are toenails. I don't get why.
    5. Ekko can only travel back in time if he survives his initial injury/mistake. If you jumped him, you could probably end him (but it has to be perfect).
    6. Ekko's parents are still alive, and they work stupidly hard to ensure ekko gets educated in piltover in the future. Thats the equivalent of 2 parents in a third world country working 5 jobs to ensure their child gets sent to a top tier university.
    7. Darius is canonically not a virgin.
    8. Braum punched through a mountain. Does that mean he could punch through malphite?
    9. How does lee sin detect champions who can float? Hell, how does rek sai detect champions who can float?
    10. Old pantheon was super buff, and his ult was him just using thunder thighs to jump halfway across the map. New pantheon? More or less the same (with some aspect powers, I guess).
    11. Old sion's passive was RNG for less damage, and the damage reduction wasn't even worth it. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger voice.
    12. Shyvanna used to be a Melee AD Fighter. Ever since LoL released the "is it meta" video for preseason, she's been an AP mage.
    13. The "Dark Horse" Series only introduced AD Jarven Mid and Brand support. Since then, brand is played more as a support.
    14. Illaoi's Eye of Nagakeborous weighs at minimum 1800 pounds. She carries it with one hand. She also jumps in the air with it. What the hell.
    15. If sylas were to "absorb" brand, would brand remain? Would sylas die? Would he ascend? What specifically are the rules to sylas (aside from there being a limit to what he can take)? Would they merge?
    16. What happens if someone holds all the darkin weapons at once? Would all the darkins host the same body, or would the dude just explode?
    17. If someone like Orianna were to hold Aatrox (better known as Aatrox's blade), what would happen, since she isn't organic life?
    18. Theres a very good chance that fiddlestick's theme is sung by fiddlesticks himself, after mimicking the voices of the girl and the lady. However.... fiddlesticks only mimics those he kills...
    19. Ornn's presence melts true ice. If he were to walk up to lissandra, would lissandra die?
    20. If yasuo is wanted all over ionia, how does he refill his cask of ale?
    21. Draven would be one of the most uselsss soldiers in actual war.
    22. Bard is the caretaker for the universe. If an object is seen to threaten the universe, he snatches it and disappears. If thats the case, why doesn't bard take the world runes?
    23. Olaf was professed to die in his sleep. Olaf thought that meant he would die peacefully. What if instead of peaceful death, it was zoe who put him to sleep?
    24. Illaoi's chromas don't change the color of the bloody tenticles.
    25. Darius cut through his general in the lore, and then turned the tide of a losing war. Honestly? He probably just did that to heal some hp.
    26. Twitch, one of Leagues scariest late game hypercarries, has the most half-assed written lore that's even worse than rammus's lore.
    27. I wonder what Volibear would look like if all his fur was shaved off
    28. the skin "Statue of Karthus" implies that there was a revolutionary war somewhere in runeterra.

Former ESPN broadcasters shares his thoughts on how to improve LCS production.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 06:25 AM PDT

Hey all, so I have recently seen the rise of criticism against NALCS production. I was honestly curious if it was really as bad as people were saying. Luckily, I had a great reference in my life that would be able to give some thoughts. I didn't give permission to share his name, but my (recently married into family) stepdad has extensive knowledge in this field, teaching broadcasting classes and a storied career on the broadcasting team with ESPN. I asked him to watch LCS and to take some notes. Here are some of his thoughts.

    1. The analyst desk is not as terrible as you think it is, he was actually quite surprised with how professional they managed to make it look during this pandemic. He was impressed with Dash, but did note that it didn't feel like a lot of the analysts had a "purpose" outside of being a talking head. He suggested they have their own segments or "niche" , like maybe one of them is very knowledgeable with draft and they make mock drafts before the game that would suit 'x' teams playstyle or would beat 'y' teams strengths. Or you could have a "build guru" that highlights new trendy builds with side by side comparisons of them both in work. This works into the next point.

    2. Show, don't tell. He noted that during both the analysts desk and game time, the crew had a tendency to explain too much with no kind of visual representation. It is more of a preparation issue than it is a problem with the personalities. Your opinions should never 'just' be your opinions on the analyst desks, it should support a point and that point should ideally have a graphic or a highlight to visually represent it. He said "why should I care what this talking head thinks if I can't see for myself"

    3. There needs to be more challenger players or ex-pros on the broadcast. There is a reason why traditional sports hire ex players or retired semi pro athletes as personalities, and it's because they can look at the game holistically with personal experience playing competitively. Soloq ranking is irrelevant. He did note that the casters were knowledgeable and was quite impressed with the on air casting talent. But he did mention "what are this guys credentials anyways aside from watching good players play" specifically during the analyst desk. (He 1000% approves of the casters, he just says they need more support from production)

    4. Mentions again that the analyst desk is not structured at all and is just a hot-take, stat comparing fest that relies heavily on Dash to keep it together and structured. Says he doesn't hate the analysts, just their content. Mentions again that the analyst desk is sorely missing an experienced ex pro. (Or two)

He didn't mention much about the graphic overlay, but he did say that it was a bit difficult finding information and suggested they streamline what is "need to know" and what is not.

All in all he gave a 7/10, saying that while he was very surprised with just how developed this hidden scene was to him, they have a lot of work to do. He left me this quote in his own words.

"They have to look at their production like a living, breathing creation. It just feels artificial. Everything should have relevance and support. Everything should feel natural with the way it progresses. Your analysts should have purpose, not just be talking heads. There's a reason that some guys make their living on sports talk shows and others make their living as analysts. You can't put a talk show guy on an analyst desk, because he will treat it like a talk show. It's not his fault, it's just a skill set thing; and the preparation is widely different. I also don't know why, but it feels like the content is very reactive. It doesn't feel like there are any graphics or video prepared to support any specific points aside from statistics. It doesn't feel prepared, and how can you nail the follow through with no preparation?"

Edit : I know Pr0lly and Crumbz are ex-players, I didn't tell him this. When he says ex-pros he was meaning more big named, seasoned veterans. Ones that use their experience for info but also have the right personality for show business. Like Shaq and Barkley, or Shannon sharpe. Like if meteos/aphro/Doublelift were to retire and join the desk. People who have played LoL as it was and then as it is today.

Biggest pet peeve about the LCS overlay is I can't tell at a glance which number represents kills or turrets.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:38 PM PDT

It takes me a full second to locate and distinguish which is quite irritating because I'm glancing at the top of the screen once every 30 seconds on average.

Especially because no other region switches the order of gold and kills.

The deep blue color is also rather daunting on the eye.

Crazy how these little things influence your eagerness to watch the LCS in a negative way

Since were getting updates on which future champions are recieving prestige skins it would be nice to know whos getting Gemstone skins

Gemstone skins are pretty hard to obtain and therefore pretty 'prestigoius' so it would be really nice to know which champions are planned to recieve one since there's nothing worse than spending your gemstones and then new skin is announced which you like way more or for a champion you play more.

Rich, who was once called the "Faker of HOTS", will take on Faker for the first time today in the LCK. In anticipation for the match, I wrote about Rich's journey to the top of HOTS and League.

i painted an artwork of SWAIN- crow daddy, hope you like it.

it started out as a portrait and i decided to give it more love and repaint the collar and shoulder pad.
really had a blast painting it :).
i thought he doesn't get enough love in the fanart community tbh.
who would you like to see next?

LCK - Faker's Blind Side Step..

Faker blindly sidesteps Sylas' E without actually witnessing him casting the ability. Just goes to show how much of a professional player Faker is.
