An unfortunate situation for Kobbe at the start but it seems like he'll be able to join a playoff contender back in EU with his girlfriend. Probably the best case scenario for him after what he just had to go through! From a TSM fan, good luck Kobbe.

It's been almost 3 years since Riot said they were going to add the Showdown 1v1/2v2 game mode to Customs

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:49 AM PDT

    http://web.archive.org/web/20200314083327/https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/7hArTUnZ-showdown-1v12v2-mode-in-customs

Considering Dota 2 / Overwatch have custom games, I'm a bit disappointed that instead of delivering on (what are basically) promises to help us enjoy League in novel ways, they do the opposite!

Consider: moving RGM resources to TFT aka a new game, rip Hide and Seek with Dominion, rip Twisted Treeline for when you have a 6 man, no return of SG Invasion, and no progress on actual custom games.

The least y'all can do is give us the "effectively zero upkeep" 1v1 mode... :/

    Quoting:

    Showdown 1v1/2v2 mode in Customs

Heya guys, while it won't be enabled anytime soon on PBE, we'll probably be adding the Showdown mode permanently to Custom games at some point. I wanted to quickly give some context on why specifically the Showdown mode, and to set expectations of any other modes coming to customs.

Every year, events come around (EG: All-Stars, PAX) that either use or could benefit greatly from having the Showdown mode available. We want to help better support community events like these(or even just friendly trash talk between friends). Rather than having to run Howling Abyss customs with a "gentlemen's agreement", Showdown just makes it so much easier. The mode honestly wouldn't really hold up as a modern day RGM (it doesn't have the punch of a Dark Star or Star Guardian Invasion), but as an option available in the background for these kinds of events, we think it's worth. In which case, why not just extend it to all players as well.

This is possible because the Showdown mode has vastly lower tech barriers in the new client to making it available (it rests on the ARAM infrastructure). It's also effectively zero upkeep from patch to patch, unlike almost every other mode that requires non-trivial attention to keep up with LoL's changes. 1v1 Showdown doesn't really have any special/custom logic, it's a just a 1v1/2v2 that triggers for the victory conditions, so it's quite future-proof.

This obviously raises the question of, "Will any other modes be available in customs soon?" We don't intend to make any other modes permanently available in customs, so this will likely be a one-off. We do however still want to get Custom games working for each RGM while they're on during the weekend (they're not disabled by design, we do actually want them).

Showdown won't be available anytime soon™, but just wanted to give a heads up if files or strings start popping up on PBE.

    insert obligatory "1v1 me bro"

People asking other people to 1v1 them in game is the most laughable thing ever.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 01:03 AM PDT

"You can't even 1v1 me bro"

This is the mark of someone who has absolutely zero understanding of what league of legends is and how its played. 1v1ing someone proves absolutely nothing other than that you're a selfish player and a bad teammate. This kind of mentality is what loses you games.

Even if you're a mechanical god and can outplay and out 1v1 anyone, you will lose more games than you win if this is your attitude.

You're the guy running it down toplane trying to get an inner turret while the enemy pushes an inhibitor on the other side of the map, then blaming your team.

You're the guy that keeps diving, throwing the game in repeated 1v5s trying to show off your flashy solo queue skills when if you'd just wait for your team ONE TIME you'd win a teamfight and the game would be over with a victory screen.

You're the reason a game that should have been a 20 minute win takes 40 minutes and you lose.

1v1 means absolutely nothing in this game unless you're playing mid or top and its the first 10 minutes of the game, and even then you should be playing with the 2v2 or 2v1 in mind -- and you have absolutely no right to get upset if every time you fight your lane opponent his jungler shows up.

That's not "You're garbage, can't even win without your jungler, 1v1 me bro"

That's YOU being garbage not paying attention, not warding, not tracking the enemy jungler, and taking fights when you have no right to do so. That's YOU trying to turn a team-oriented strategy game into a 1v1 fighting game.

"Team so bad, I'm 14/0 and can't carry. I could 1v1 any of you"

No, bud. YOU are the bad one. If you can't transition a 14/0 lead into a victory, I don't even know where to begin giving you advice. Play a different game maybe? Idk.

League is a team game. Saying anything about 1v1ing people just makes you look like a spoiled, baby raging 13 year old who's only on the computer because your mom took your Xbox away.

Also -- anyone who says "1v1 me IRL" 100% would get their ass kicked. I'd put money on it.

I'm new and it's great playing against smurfs mostly every game that all chat and say "ez game" the entire game, players that 1v4 an entire team and end the game 20-1. You guys really make the ten minutes getting into a game and the following 20 minutes in the game extremely fun. Also, I love being called a noob by you and my teammates every game because I cannot get 10 kills in the first 5 minutes of the game. Thank you and good luck in your next game beating on new players!

The 'meta' insults in this game are wild.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:12 AM PDT

I've noticed that even insults have a seasonal meta, and the insults are unique to this game from what I can tell. Every season, there seems to be a new buzz word that people love to use in ranked games to put down their teammates, which I can only imagine comes from streamers. I think it started season 1, when people would go "Dat Ashe" when she messed up, which turned to "Dat mid", "Dat LB", etc. People also used (what I think are) Korean insults like "Noob ssibal" and other stuff. These usually stay around for a few months and come up in almost EVERY game, until the playerbase decides to move onto something else, just like a meta.

This season, it's "Dog mid woof woof" or "dog jg diff gg". The ridiculous shit that people throw around in game is just funny. I can't imagine anyone using these insults in real life. "This dog server taking forever with our food, woof", or "That team has a dog QB". Can't people just use.. normal words? Or, I know this sounds crazy, maybe have a season of NOT insulting your teammates?

Its been over a year now that it was brought to awareness that there are some problems with the Lissandra passiv. Yesterday I played a game and got 80 Gold from a plating without anyone else being close.

Is it actively ignored or just too hard to fix?

Dom breaks down the implications of conflict of interest from today's leaked clip of Leena talking about current trade status of a player on TSM while doublelift, a player for TSM who is also dating the president of TSM, was present in the room.

Dom uses a great analogy to share with viewers on hot line league what this conversation could imply and what the follow up actions of Leena on reddit could imply.

Riot and the LCS needs to address this.

High MMR matchmaking comparison EUW / NA / KR

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:49 AM PDT

I think with a post like this people don't want to waste time reading stuff so I'm going to be quick then put the data, I'll put my thoughts on it afterwards. Below is a table showing the data collected by looking at the last 20 games played by each of the top 100 players on the EUW, NA and KR servers. I looked at the tier average for each of those 20 games and recorded the frequency split by server. I also took the amount of time each player took to play their last 20 games and averaged it to get a value for roughly how many games the top 100 players on each server are playing a day.

    Europe West North America Korea
    Master 264 42 12
    Grandmaster 1732 1286 1189
    Challenger 4 672 799
    Average Games Per Day 4.2 3.45 3.42

So even to someone who doesn't know what this means I think it's fairly obvious that the numbers for Europe look very different to the relatively similar stats for Korea and North America. I think to most people on this subreddit however the table should be fairly self explanatory. The only misunderstanding I could see happening is that these numbers do not reflect the actual number of games happening. For example the 4 data points for European challenger MMR games does not equal 4 different games. In fact 3 of those data points are from the same game. Which means there are only 2 games I could find which could reasonably be called a Challenger MMR game. You can take a look at them here.

    1 2

I actually tweeted some stats like this recently and one of the main counterpoints I got was "maybe because everyone is scrimming all the time in Europe there are actually just less chance for higher MMR games to happen". Even if this were true I think the disparity between EUW and the other two servers should not be this large based off just that factor alone. On top of that at least for the top 100 players we can actually see that people are on average playing more games a day in Europe than the other two servers. So If anything we should be having more higher MMR games than them, not less.

All three servers have exactly 300 Challenger players and 700 Grandmaster players which is the reason I chose to compare these three in the first place. Obviously some of the stats might change if I had spent the time to include all 300 players from each server and sampled more games however I think the sample I have taken is already large enough to prove my point.

I don't know whether Riot is deliberately using a different algorithm for matchmaking in Europe and this is the intended result or if something has gone wrong and this is completely unintentional. Unfortunately there is no way of finding out without a statement from Riot themselves. Regardless of which it is I think it's safe to say that most people would agree that the current state of Matchmaking on EUW is unacceptable.

One final point is that this problem (whatever is actually causing it) may be affecting matchmaking at all levels of soloQ. I'm just not sure how easy that would be to prove compared to showing the problems at the top end.

I don't really see any value in turning this into anymore of a wall of text than it is, I think the stats speak for themselves. If you want to see the full raw data I'll link it here. Apart from that if anyone wants to ask me anything about this or point out something I might have missed, feel free.

RiotScruffy: Tweaking matching for high MMR in EUW

    Link to the tweet: https://twitter.com/MarkYetter/status/1259935534706651136

    Link to the comment

We're tweaking matchmaking configurations for very high MMR in EUW to match other regions. They should now prioritize closer MMR over slightly faster matches.

Ty @Prosfair for finding this discrepency.

Here is @jonmoormann our matchmaking designer's full take:

Interesting analysis! I have some more detailed takeaways, but here is a quick TL;DR:
EUW did have a configuration difference that was optimizing for faster matches at higher MMR for a little looser matchmaking. The actual Match Quality is way closer when measuring by the metrics we actually use to make games (not LP), but there's some room for improvement so we're going to shift it to be closer in line to other regions.

    - First, cool idea and thanks for bringing this stuff up!
    - So as you know, we don't match on LP, we match on MMR. The two numbers correlate pretty well up at the top of the ladder, but there's a lot of ways it can differ from region to region. So while the numbers can look pretty jarring here, they're much closer in reality. For example, looking at only players with Master or higher MMR, the 90th percentile of worst games still had both teams within ~1 win's MMR of each other in all regions. Differences between teammates were also extremely similar across all regions.
    - EUW was configured slightly differently because of some changes from back when Position Ranks came out in NA and KR
    - The reason basing this analysis on visible rank makes the problem look a little worse is that it assumes all Master/GM/Challenger players are a uniform skill distribution across all regions. In some regions, the ladder is very top heavy, with the best players having a fairly sizable lead. Some regions are middle heavy, with some outliers on the high side taking the Challenger spots. So one GM player may be substantially different than another GM player, MMR-wise, and averaging out based on tier can make a match look worse than it is.
    - While LP and MMR correlate pretty well at the top of the ladder for accounts with a lot of games, this is less true for newer accounts. A Diamond I player with a lower game count may be actually a Diamond I player, or a Challenger player still on their climb. Some regions have higher incidences of multiple accounts, and that can make any kind of LP-based matchmaking analysis a bit misleading.

I don't want to let those quibbles take away from how useful this was, though, so thanks again!

Runeterra will be a really bad place to live in in a few years

    Posted: 11 May 2020 04:25 AM PDT

Like, there are already dead things coming back to life during the harrowing but it's just the tip of the iceberg. There is Mordekaiser building his undead empire, the "minor" demons like Tham Kench or Evelynn and the "major" demons like Fiddlesticks casually killing people left and right; The Void is already on Runeterra corrupting stuff around Icathia, Aatrox is running around killing aspects (already killed Pantheon) and all of this WHILE there is a full blown Civil War in Demacia, Shurima is emerging as a super power candidate, the Black Rose is plotting in Noxus, Miss Fortune is purging the previous leadership in Bilgewater while Gankplank is planning his comeback and there are like 3 rival tribes competeing for power in Freljord.

It isn't gonna be fun being an ordinary citizen in Runeterra (I mean in a way it already isn't but nevermind) and we don't know what other crazy stuff is being planned for future champions.

Edit: other honorable mentions include Syndra in Ionia just casually being the most powerful being in existence, Rek'sai possibly leaving its desert, Zaun with its toxic air and chembarons taking power including Urgot and also the small but rising dark sorcerer that is Veigar. Also Xerath.
